Population Challenges:

There are three main population challenges in which Austria faces. First, the population growth of Austria has reached such a low stage, that the death rate has risen above the birth rate, with the death presently at 10/1000, and the birth 9/1000. (U.S. Census Bureau, 2010) On top of that, the migration rate is so low, there is hardly anything keeping Austria’s population balanced and steady.

Secondly, the population dependency is at a very high level due to the increasing amount of elderly in the community. The dependency level of Austria accounts for 32% of the population. (PRB, 2010) Austria is a situation similar to Canada in that the population pyramid is slowly becoming reversed. Soon, the amount of elderly in the community will be so great, that the working class will not be able to sustain that high of a dependency load.

Thirdly, among examination of Austria’s population pyramid at present date, the percent of men ages 65 and over are significantly lower than that of the women. The total amount of males amounts to 612,613, while the females amount to 865,283, 200 000 more. The male to female ratio is at 0.71 to 1. (CIA, 2010) The life expectancy for males is 77 years of age, not bad, but poor in comparison to the female’s life expectancy, 83 years of age. (CIA, 2010) Males tend to have a shorter life span, but with the increasing population in elderly people, the amount of females over males will continue to grow even more, causing greater and greater problems.
